The studies in our school last 5 years (First certificate for Ieropsaltis) or 6 years (Diploma of Byzantine music). The lessons are twice per week and each hour the students are being studied different skills.

Detail:

  1. The first year the students are being taught one hour per week exercises to control their voice, first touch with the simpler book of Byzantine music named "Syntomon Anastimatarion by Ioannis Protopsaltis" and the second hour listening of hymns.
  2. The second year the students are being taught the " Syntomon and Argosyntomon Anastimatarion by Ioannis Protopsaltis".
  3. The third year one hour per week the students learn the "Hermologion by Ioannis Protopsaltis" and the other hour the "Doxastarion by Petros Peloponnisios".
  4. The fourth and fifth year the lessons includes all the classical Byzantine music tracks of the past centuries from the two kinds of Byzantine music "Papadikon", and "Stihirarikon". These years the students feat for the very first time the "treasure" of Byzantine music as "Cheruvic hymns", "Koinonika", "Arges Doxologies", "Arga Doxastika", etc.
  5. The sixth year the students learn very difficult hymns like "Kalophonic Hermes", "Kratimata" etc. All these very difficult hymns focus on the perfection of the technique and the knowledge of every student.

The books we use are all the classical books as "Anastasimatarion", "Hermologion" by Ioannis Protopsaltis, "Doxastarion" by Petros Peloponnisios, "Tameion Anthologias" (Vesper, Orthros, Liturgy) by Theodoros Fokaeus, and "Kalophonikon Hermologion" by Gregorios Protopsaltis. Additional we use parts of some books as "Hermologion" by Petros Peloponissios, "Tameion Anthologias" by Chourmouzios Chartofylakas and "Doxastarion" by Iakovos Protopsaltis.

The book for the theory of Byzantine music we use is the "Theory and Act of Byzantine music" by Demetrios Panagiotopoulos which is based to the classical theory of Crysanthos who was one of the three reformers of Byzantine music under the supervision of Ecumenical Patriarche (the reform took place in 1881).

Except the primary courses the students are being taught some "secondary" courses which are very usefull for the knowledge perfection of every student. "Typikon", "Orthography", "Hymnology", "History of music", "Liturgy", "Theory of the European music" are some of them. It is noticed that if a student wants to graduate Diploma of Byzantine music is prerequisite the "Theory of European music" by the State.

The most "difficult" course is the student's choir. Every year both students and teachers give their best for the excellent cooperation and aesthetic result to this really difficult course. And we say it is a course because the knowledge you gain is invaluable.

The present of the students at least twice per month at the churches their teachers chant is required because all the courses are usefull but the practice in real time and conditions creates the chanters!

Special place in our school has the children class. The children (under 12 years old) learn the hymns by listening them and every Sunday they have the opportunity to apply their knowledge at the church.

Finally there are special classes for chanters or experts who they want to gain a specialize in a specific part of Byzantine music.

Melopoia class: In the first course the students learn to compose "Stihirarica" according to the composition rules of Petros Lampadarios. Also they learn the rules of Orthography. As their knowledge in composition getting deeper the most difficult music tracks they compose as "Papadika" and "Arga Stihirarika".

"Doxastarion" by Iakovos Protopsaltis and Petros Filanthidis class: The two books "Doxastarion" by Iakovos Protopsaltis and "Doxastarion" by Petros Filanthidis include the most difficult music texts of Byzantine music. So a detailed analysis of those two books helps the prospective chanters to understand the way that Byzantine music is constructed, the composition rules and the sequence of the music notes. The chanters who will follow this class, will perfect their techique and they will learn to read very difficult music texts.
