Traditional Greek music

The traditional Greek music and songs are always present in every facet of our life.

Through those no-name music creations with the huge variety of rhythms and music scales every person can express his happiness, his sadness, the agony about his life and the death, his religious feelings, and also he can refresh his historical memories.

The connection between Byzantine and traditional Greek music is too close that many analysts use to say the phrase " both of the 2 kinds of music are children of the same family". Common music scales, traditional melodies that are similar to Byzantine music, chanters that become singers and singers that become chanters are few examples which proove the phrase above. Although this connection we can't mix the 2 kinds of music and we can't say that they are the same music. There is a huge difference between "singing" and "chanting", and this difference maybe was born because of the different purpose that the 2 kinds of music service. Opposed to Byzantine music, traditional music is characterized by appearance of music instruments, dancing rythms and freedom to the musician to use the music scales as they want.

Because of the love we have about our traditional music and after many suggestions of our students we decided to create a section in our school focused to our traditional music. All the teachers are famous musicians and they try to teach the students not only to learn playing a simple melody but to excite the music imagination of the students learning how to create their own melodies. The "weapons" we give to our student to achieve the goal of improvisation are the teaching of the European music theory, the Byzantine music theory, and of course the improvement of the skills in a music instrument.

We think deeply that the section of traditional music in our school is the best chance for a profound analysis of traditional Greek music.
