The violin is a stringed musical instrument played with a bow. It appeared in Greece in the 17th century and probably comes from the folk musical instruments of the Slavs. The violin is a fretless instrument and can render all the micro-intervals of the “sounds” and “makams” of traditional and church music. It requires highly developed technique and is played in many different ways.
Greek people use the term ‘violins’ collectively to characterize the small folk or traditional orchestras of various instruments (oud, clarinet, tambourine, tsabouna, etc.) demonstrating thus the important position of that particular instrument in the musical tradition of our country.
